About Clifton

Best known for the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge and for being the home of Bristol Zoo, Clifton is a suburb of Bristol, South West England. The area, which includes the areas of Cliftonwood and Hotwells, enjoys excellent public transport links to Bristol city centre and the surrounding areas, with a local train station, Clifton Down Railway Station and frequent bus services.

Situated to the west of the city centre, Clifton is one of Bristols oldest and most affluent suburbs. Primarily a residential area, Clifton benefited from constant development and rapid expansion during the Georgian era and still displays many excellent examples of Georgian architecture today. Georgian streets in the area, such as Royal York Crescent, are frequently used as filming locations in period dramas. Alongside the Georgian terraces, the University of Bristol also has many facilities within the Clifton area including Goldney Hall, Clifton Down and Clifton College.

Residents have a range of leisure facilities to choose from including the wide open spaces of Durden Down located to the north, Clifton Lido which was reopened in 2008 and the popular shopping areas of Whiteladies Rd and Avon Gorge.
